Slow Dancers, with singer songwriter Jesse Hill at the controls, is a world-class band making music that defies conventional notions of popular form; it is spacious and beautiful, slow moving and alive. These are gorgeous songs… Hill’s lyrics suggest the great poetry of a lost romantic era with a freshness and originality indicative of a remarkable talent. Drums are played with power and musicality; Cole Woods’ sense of feel builds on the great post-rock tradition of the Dirty Three’s Jim White and Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley. Marie-France Hollier’s bass is a foundation, the aesthetic bottom line around which these songs are built. Greg MacPherson adds a well-established strength and character, playing second guitar and lending his singular voice to ambitious vocal arrangements. Think Sonic Youth meets Codiene or an updated, downtown Winnipeg version of the Jesus and Mary Chain.
